Nilufer O. DeScherer, a Partner with Archer P.C. in Hackensack, N.J., has been elected President of Women Lawyers in Bergen (“WLIB”) for the 2014-2015 term. This professional bar organization provides opportunities for networking, professional development and advocacy for female members of the bar in Bergen County.
As President, Ms. DeScherer has overall leadership responsibility for the organization, whose members include solo practitioners, big firm partners, public interest lawyers, judges, law students, law clerks and corporate in-house counsel. WLIB connects women lawyers, providing opportunities to enjoy the community and camaraderie of shared aspirations and challenges while promoting professional and personal advancement. Annual WLIB events include a Law Clerk’s Luncheon, a Judicial Reception honoring newly appointed and retiring women judges, Meet and Mingle with Women Elected Officials, co-sponsorship of a Diversity Dinner, CLE courses, the Annual Dinner and other networking events.
Ms. DeScherer was sworn in and installed as President by Judge Rachelle Harz, J.S.C. (Bergen County) at the WLIB Annual Dinner on June 9, 2014, at the Bacari Grill in Washington Township (Bergen County). Other officers who were installed include Nina C. Remson, Vice President; Helayne Weiss, Treasurer; and Michele S. Austin, Secretary. Paula A. Franzese, Peter W. Rodino Professor of Law at Seton Hall Law School, delivered the keynote speech to a gathering that included both men and women lawyers and judges who support the organization. This year’s Jean Robertson Scholarship Foundation scholarship was presented to Seton Hall Law School Student Sophia Iqbal.
Ms. DeScherer said to the attorneys and judges in attendance that “representing our clients to the best of our ability is our first calling. It is important to be passionate about what you do. Work your hardest. But hopefully we will all find the time to give back to those who need our help and to mentor those new to our profession.”
