N.J. Supreme Court Appoints John Connell to Board of Statewide Legal Fund

The New Jersey Supreme Court has appointed attorney John C. Connell of Archer, P.C., to the Board of Trustees of the IOLTA (Income on Non-Interest Bearing Lawyer Trust Accounts) Fund of the Bar of New Jersey, a Statewide trust that generates funds to provide legal assistance to the poor, improvements to the administration of justice, and legal education to the public.
Mr. Connell was appointed by official Order of Chief Justice Stuart Rabner to a term that runs through February 2016.
The Supreme Court created IOLTA as a temporary depository for client funds that are too small in amount or held for too short a period to earn interest net of bank charges or administrative fees. Through IOLTA, such funds are placed in a pooled, interest bearing trust account. Participation in New Jersey’s IOLTA program is mandatory for lawyers handling client funds that are small in amount and/or held for a short duration. Under Supreme Court rules, if a client’s deposit is large enough or held for a long enough time to earn interest after fees and charges, then the funds must be placed in a non-IOLTA client trust account.

The interest generated by IOLTA is disbursed according to Supreme Court rule, with at least 75% going to Legal Services of New Jersey, Inc., to provide legal assistance to indigents in civil matters, at least 12.5 % going to the New Jersey State Bar Foundation to provide free law-related public educational programs, and the remaining amount awarded in discretionary grants up to $150,000 annually. The IOLTA Fund disbursed $13.7 million in grants in 2010.
