Managing Intellectual Property Awards John Connell Outstanding Litigator and Archer’s Matal v. Tam Milestone Case of the Year

Archer also receives prestigious nomination for US Firm to Watch

Archer Partner, John C. Connell, was awarded the top honor of “2017 Outstanding IP Litigator – New Jersey” by Managing Intellectual Property (Managing IP) at the publication’s Americas Awards ceremony on March 15th, 2018 at the Essex House in New York City.

Managing IP Americas Awards recognizes the best firms and individuals for intellectual property nationally and regionally in the US, Canada and Latin America. Mr. Connell was recognized for his role as counsel of record in Matal v. Tam, arguing before the Supreme Court of the United States in his successful representation of Simon Shiao Tam, lead singer of the Asian dance-rock band THE SLANTS. In addition, Mr. Connell was also honored by Managing IP by being nominated for the “2017 US IP Appellate Practitioner” award.

Mr. Connell, who heads Archer’s Media & Communications Law and Appellate Advocacy Groups, said, ”We are truly honored by the award and the notoriety the case has received, acknowledging our efforts to successfully secure Mr. Tam’s rights through the Court’s unanimous decision, as well as its ramifications for free speech.”

Constitutional law has been at the center of Mr. Connell’s 32-year career. Mr. Connell practices civil litigation as a first-chair attorney in jury and bench trials and appeals in State and federal courts. His clients range from Fortune 100 companies to individuals in an array of complex commercial, employment, civil rights, communications law, healthcare, and intellectual property matters. Mr. Connell’s work has resulted in precedential reported opinions on issues of constitutional jurisprudence, as well as statutory and common law questions.

Archer also captured the “2017 Milestone Case of the Year” Award for Matal v. Tam. In the groundbreaking U.S. Supreme Court trademark case decided last year, the Court ruled that the disparagement clause of the Lanham Act is unconstitutional under the First Amendment’s Free Speech Clause. The Court’s decision has already had far-reaching effects on the government’s involvement in and regulation of trademark registration.

Archer was also honored by Managing IP in receiving their nomination for “2017 US Firm to Watch.” Managing IP’s recognition follows other recent national distinctions for Archer and Mr. Connell, including:

  • Law360 MVP in Intellectual Property (Mr. Connell)
  • Law360 IP Group of the Year (Archer)
  • International Trademark Association Volunteer Service Award for Pro Bono Services (Archer)
