The Philadelphia Bar Association’s Philadelphia VIP Program is honoring Archer attorney Jay S. Ruder as its Volunteer of the Month for November. Mr. Ruder is being recognized for his outstanding pro bono work on its Good Deeds Project, preparing Deeds for low-income residents to enable them to resolve title issues and qualify for various City homeowner assistance programs. Philadelphia VIP provides legal services for low-income residents and families facing civil legal problems that threaten their basic human needs.
Regarding Mr. Ruder’s volunteer work and participation in the program, Philadelphia VIP Program Coordinator Joe Durkin said, “Jay’s terrific work for VIP’s clients is a true inspiration, which will hopefully inspire fellow professionals to step up and say ‘yes’ to a pro bono case with VIP.”
Mr. Ruder’s s pro bono service is tied to his deep Philadelphia roots. His high school valedictory address dealt with the need to give back to the community. Forty years later, he still lives by that message. In the dozen VIP cases he has accepted since 2012, he has helped his Philadelphia neighbors obtain title to their properties, qualify for basic systems repairs, and avoid homelessness. His willingness to help not only sets his clients up for long-term stability, it also can have immediate, life-changing effects.
Regarding his pro bono service, Mr. Ruder said, “My VIP clients end up in desperate circumstances not through any fault of their own, but because of oversights from generations ago. When you accept a VIP case, you make a real difference in your client’s physical, mental and financial well-being. You accomplish something meaningful for the client and for yourself.”
Mr. Ruder concentrates his practice on real estate law, representing global, regional and local businesses and institutions in acquisition, sale and financing transactions, as well as tax assessment, land use and condemnation cases.
