IRS Extends Due Dates for Individual Returns

On Wednesday March 17th, the IRS announced that the due date for all individual tax returns for 2020 has been extended from April 15 to May 17. Further, the due date for all Form 1040-related payments has been extended to May 17.

Taxpayers do not have to file an extension request or any other forms in order to receive the benefit of these extended due dates ‒ they’re automatic. If individuals need additional time to file their personal returns, they may file for an extension of time to file those (until October 15) provided their extension request is filed on or before May 17.

Be careful: the IRS did not extend the due date for the first quarter 2021 estimated taxes. Those remain due on April 15.

Additionally, the states have not extended their due dates.
