Archer kicked off the law firm’s Summer Associate Program on June 29. This year’s summer class includes eight students. Regarding this year’s program, Archer Chief Diversity Officer Lloyd Freeman said, “Our Summer Associate Program allows us to continue to create a pipeline of talented, diverse students. This year’s diverse class truly represents the future of our profession.”
In light of the coronavirus pandemic, the firm is running an abbreviated 5-week remote program. Sarah Gribbin, Co-Chair of Archer’s Hiring Committee said, “We are looking forward to welcoming our summer associates and helping them navigate the remote program, which will be a unique experience for both the students and our attorneys. We have created a number of remote social events and meetings to give the students an opportunity to interact with and get to know our attorneys as if they were in the office.” Archer’s Summer Associate Program provides a wide range of opportunities for accomplished law students to gain real world experience working with attorneys, staff and clients, as well as the opportunity to socialize with many of the firm’s lawyers, professionals and staff.
To accommodate the remote work arrangements, the firm has moved away from 1-to-1 mentoring for each student and has implemented a “team mentoring” approach for this year’s Summer Program. Each Summer Associate will have a team of at least four mentors, which will include associates, junior partners and one member of the Hiring Committee. These mentors will be available to answer any questions and help guide the Associates through the Program, recognizing the challenges posed by doing this remotely.
Throughout the program, students will begin to discover what practice areas they enjoy most and what aligns best with their strengths and interests. The program has been adapted to ensure the safety of the Summer Associates without compromising the real-life work experience or social activities. The firm is providing a robust program of briefings and trainings to give Summer Associates a good idea of what life is like at Archer. Archer attorneys are inviting Summer Associates to join virtual conferences with clients, Zoom court appearances, video depositions and more. Additionally, the firm has virtual happy hours and networking sessions to ensure the Summer Associates feel connected and have a good sense of Archer’s culture.
