Archer Wins the 2017 International Trademark Association Volunteer Service Award for Pro Bono Services

Archer has been honored by the International Trademark Association (INTA) as the sole recipient of its Volunteer Service Award (VSA) for “Pro Bono Services Provided by Organizations.”  INTA is a member-based organization that supports and advances trademarks and related intellectual property in order to protect consumers and to promote fair and effective commerce. The VSAs recognize both individuals and firms that have provided exemplary volunteer service during the past year.

Archer is being recognized for providing pro bono legal services in this year’s landmark U.S. Supreme Court federal trademark/First Amendment case, Matal v. Tam. In June 2017, the Supreme Court handed down a unanimous 8-0 favorable decision in the high-profile case. Under the ruling, the High Court’s decision puts an end to the statutory bar that precluded a trademark applicant from obtaining registration of a trademark that was deemed “disparaging” by the government. The decision is also likely to have a hand in invalidating other provisions of the Lanham Act which are currently on appeal, including the statutory bar against “scandalous” or “immoral” trademarks.

Archer’s dedicated team of Ronald Coleman, John Connell and Joel MacMull successfully represented musician Simon Shiao Tam before the U.S. Supreme Court. Archer provided pro bono services to Tam since it inherited the case in the spring of 2015. “This is a special distinction for Archer,” said Mr. Coleman. “We are thrilled that our efforts have achieved a significant legal policy resolution supporting freedom of speech issues across the country.”

“We are honored to receive this award from INTA,” said Joel MacMull. “Our trademark lawyers are committed to protecting what are often our clients’ most prized assets — their brand identity and reputation.” “INTA’s award is a fitting recognition of our team’s dedication, time, resources, and hard work over several years, culminating in Mr. Tam’s victory earlier this year.”

Attorneys in Archer’s Intellectual Property Group are leaders in their fields and represent clients internationally, nationally and regionally with respect to the protection, enforcement and monetization of their intellectual property interests involving patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets and rights of publicity. The firm’s intellectual property attorneys have been recognized by leading legal publications and rankings.
